GLFFC Develops New Fire Danger Website

The Great Lakes Forest Fire Compact is developing a new forest fire danger web page. This project is being conducted in conjunction with MesoWest from the University of Utah and is currently being supported by the Michigan , Minnesota and Wisconsin Departments of Natural Resources. The site will display Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System (CFFDRS) indices and codes, as well as a number of other fire danger products from a network of weather stations across the Great Lakes region. The website is still under development but the current product may be viewed at http://www.met.utah.edu/cgi-bin/droman/grtlks_home.cgi.

Some of the current features of the Great Lakes Fire and Fuels website are:

  • Fire danger rating codes are displayed at National Weather Service (NWS) and Remote Automated Weather Station (RAWS) sites.
  • Produces next day forecasted values in station tables
  • Displays NFDRS codes in tables. In the future they will appear on the map.
  • Downloadable weather and codes.
  •  Displays CFFDRS numbers: Current (last actual reading), Forecast and Previous (the forecast reading which can be compared to actual).
  • Produces graphs for historical trends of Indices and Codes. Currently preset, but in the future the graphs will be user defined.

This project is currently in its first phase. Additional site enhancements are being planned, including an expansion of the network to include weather stations in Ontario and Manitoba . Additional enhancements will be incorporated as funds become available.
